Fondue Forks
The fondue fork is one of two accessories that are necessary to have a successful fondue. The fondue pot is where the substance being fondued is warmed and kept warm. One will then traditionally have some type of food to dip in the fondue. This food can be cheese cubes, croutons or bread cubes, fruit, and even various types of vegetables. In order to dip these foods into the fondue, the best utensil is the fondue fork.
The fondue fork is a long handled utensil. It has two tines which are separated to make it easier to spear the food to be dipped. Typically the tines are serated. This is to make it easier to keep the food attached to the tines, and prevent it from falling off into the fondue itself.
The handles on most fondue forks are heat resistant. They are usually made of plastic or wood, with the metal tines attached to it. Many times, sets of fondue forks come with a variety of colors. This is to ensure that each diner is able to keep track of their individual fork.
Not all fondue forks are created equal. There are plastic, disposable fondue forks. In many instances they will suffice, but it is not suggested to re-use these. Also, if these plastic, disposable forks get to close to the fondue heating element, they will melt and make a heck of a mess. If a one time, non-reusable answer is sought, one may try to utilize bamboo skewers instead. They are not prone to melting, are sanitary, and tend to be a little more affordable than the plastic fondue forks.
Stainless steel and wooden fondue forks tend to be more durable and are highly re-useable. The stainless variety even allow users to cook fondue meat with them. They will not melt under high temperatures, and their wooden handles keep them cool to the touch.
